Anxiety is a natural response to an actual or a perceived threat. When anxious people report difficulty relaxing, feelings of nervousness, excessive worry that is difficult to control, feelings of impending doom also known as catastrophic thoughts. Sometimes people develop panic symptoms which can involve intense fear often accompanied by physical sensations including a rapid heartbeat, changes in our breathing, sweating, dizziness and chest pain. People who have had panic attacks often describe the experience as feeling like they were on the outside of themselves looking in. After having one panic attack, it is not uncommon for people to worry often about having additional panic attacks.
Therapy can help prevent worsening symptoms. During therapy, clients can learn relaxation strategies and cognitive techniques such as reframing unhelpful thoughts to decrease the amount of time they spend ruminating about things they can't control. Learning to focus on things like gratitude, mindfulness, healthy living and relaxation strategies can help. Having a supportive person to talk to about your anxiety is incredibly helpful for most people.
